The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Jane Frances Abodo, has underscored the pivotal role prosecutors play in safeguarding justice and maintaining public trust.

“The responsibilities of prosecutors are not mere administrative tasks but the foundation of a just society, ensuring that victims receive justice, the accused are fairly tried, and public confidence in our legal system is maintained,” she said.

Running from August 10 to 14, 2025, the five-day programme aims to equip prosecutors with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to address performance challenges and improve the delivery of criminal justice.

Justice Abodo stressed that every sanctioned file, court submission, and case presented by the Office of the DPP has a profound impact on individuals’ lives and shapes public trust in the institution. She said the mentorship programme is a strategic response to operational challenges, designed to build the capacity of state attorneys, foster professional growth, and enhance the delivery of justice.

The workshop has brought together prosecutors from across the country for intensive training sessions, peer learning, and advisory support.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has pledged continued support for the mentorship initiative, which was launched in 2024 in partnership with the ODPP to build a new generation of competent, ethical prosecutors.

UNODC Head in Uganda, Sharon Lesa Nyambe, said the programme goes beyond technical training to instill fairness, impartiality, and respect for the rule of law.

“This programme is not merely about training; it is about shaping a generation of prosecutors whose competence is matched by integrity, and whose advocacy is anchored in fairness, impartiality, and the rule of law,” Nyambe said.

She reaffirmed UNODC’s commitment to working with the ODPP and other justice stakeholders to strengthen Uganda’s prosecutorial service and build a more resilient justice system.
