The Judiciary, in its efforts to enhance case management and promote people-centered justice, recently featured Plea Bargain as a key topic on Salam TV's "Judiciary" show, hosted by Businge Mariam. The program, which airs every Thursday from 11 am to 12 pm, provides a platform for insightful discussions on justice-related issues.
Guest speaker HW Janefrances Nanvuma, Chief Magistrate Mpiji, shed light on the benefits of Plea Bargain in reducing case backlog, mending relations, and saving time and money for both the state and involved parties. As head of the Mpiji Circuit, HW Nanvuma emphasized the importance of sensitization in promoting Plea Bargain as an effective tool for case management.
Plea Bargain is a negotiated agreement between the prosecution and the accused person, represented by a lawyer. The accused person pleads guilty to the charges against them in exchange for a lesser sentence, without going through a full trial. This process involves the Court, Prosecution, Accused person/Defense Advocate, Victim, and probation officers, and is specifically used for criminal cases.
HW Nanvuma highlighted the benefits of the Plea Bargain, including:
Reduced case backlog, mended relations between parties, Time and cost savings for both the state and involved parties
During the show, HW Nanvuma expressed appreciation to the Judiciary for the special seating arrangement at the send-off ceremony for the late Hon. Justice George Wilson Kanyeihamba, who served the Supreme Court between 1997-2009. She offered condolences to the family and colleagues of the late Justice, saying "May His Soul rest in Eternal peace."
HW Nanvuma emphasized the importance of mediation as a form of case management, aligning with the Judiciary's theme of "A People-Centered Justice System." She encouraged various forms of mediation to achieve this goal, highlighting the Judiciary's commitment to promoting people-centered justice.
