Uganda Celebrates 98th Anniversary for China's People Liberation Army

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, attended the 98th anniversary celebration of the founding of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) in Uganda.

He praised China for its remarkable transformation into the world's second-largest economy and highlighted the significance of the China-Uganda partnership.

Tayebwa noted that China's economic transformation serves as an inspiration to many African countries, including Uganda, in their pursuit of inclusive and sustainable economic development.

"China has transformed itself from a largely agrarian economy into the world’s second-largest economy within a century. That transformation serves as an inspiration to many African countries, including Uganda, as we pursue our own path toward inclusive and sustainable economic development," Tayebwa said.

Tayebwa highlighted the significant contributions China has made to Uganda's development, particularly in trade and infrastructure development.

He mentioned major road projects and power generation initiatives, such as the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Project.

"From major road projects to power generation—including the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Project—Chinese investments are helping shape Uganda’s industrial future and build critical national infrastructure," Tayebwa said.

Tayebwa also praised China's role in promoting global peace and security. He noted that China is the second-largest financial contributor to the United Nations peacekeeping budget and the largest troop contributor among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

"China has also emerged as a key player in global peace and security... Chinese peacekeepers are currently deployed in several African countries, including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Mali," Tayebwa said.

The celebration marked a significant moment in the China-Uganda relationship, highlighting the strong partnership between the two countries.

Tayebwa's statement underscores the importance of China's contributions to Uganda's development and global peace efforts.
