The president of the Uganda Olympic Committee William Fredrick Blick has been elected as an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member during the 133rd IOC session in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 9th October 2018.
The IOC is the highest Sports governing body in the world responsible for organising the modern Olympic Games.
Blick becomes only the second Ugandan after Maj Gen Francis Nyangweso to get to the top position of the IOC.
Nyangweso spent 28 years (1981-2009) at the helm of the Uganda Olympic Committee before William Blick took over
The IOC is the controlling body for the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), which are the national constituents of the worldwide Olympic Movement.
As of 2016, there are 206 NOCs officially recognised by the IOC.
The IOC under the Olympic Agenda 2020 aims at a more diverse and inclusive membership hence the recent addition of nine members.
The nine new members have an extensive knowledge of the sports movement and will add extra strength and experience to the universal college of IOC.
William Blick was chosen after close consultation with the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF)
The IOC Ethics Commission conducted integrity checks and vetted all the proposed members.
IOC members are representatives of the IOC in their respective countries, and not their country’s delegate within the IOC.
