A video circulating online that claims to show Rwandan President Paul Kagame responding to Ugandan TikToker Anthony Katongole, popularly known as “Chicken Chicken,” is misleading and taken out of context.
The TikToker made controversial remarks in a June 2025 YouTube podcast, alleging that Rwandans are poor, go hungry, and that the country has narrow, poor-quality roads.
In response, a short video clip surfaced online purportedly showing President Kagame addressing these comments, allegedly telling the TikToker, “You can go to hell.” However, this clip has been deceptively edited.
A review of the full video reveals that Kagame was not addressing the Ugandan TikToker at all. The President was, in fact, responding to criticism from Western governments and international organisations regarding Rwanda’s alleged involvement in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The remarks were made during Kwibuka 31, Rwanda’s annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide. In his speech, Kagame defended Rwanda’s position on regional security and dismissed external pressure to disengage from issues in eastern DRC, where Rwanda has been accused of supporting the M23 rebel group.
Verdict: FALSE
The viral clip falsely attributes Kagame’s comments to a response to a Ugandan TikToker. The video is edited and misrepresents the original context of the President’s remarks.
