Following the launch of the Democratic Front (DF) by Nyendo-Mukungwe Member of Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga.
The unveiling, which took place on Tuesday 27 May 2025 evening in Kampala City, has since generated a flurry of reactions from residents and political observers, particularly in Masaka—Mpuuga’s home region.
Describing the initiative as "a new dawn in Uganda’s political journey," Mpuuga announced that the Democratic Front would stand on pillars of integrity, virtues , and inclusive leadership.
The move comes after months of internal tensions within the National Unity Platform (NUP), where Mpuuga recently served as Deputy President for Buganda region.
Given Mpuuga’s deep political roots in Masaka, where he has served in leadership for over a decade, many residents are closely monitoring what impact the new party could have both locally and on the national political stage.
Reactions on the ground reflect a sharp divide. Some locals welcome the DF as a step toward reclaiming Masaka’s political influence.
“This is a party rooted in Masaka. We, the people of Masaka, must rally behind it and give it strength so it can grow with a strong foundation,” said Deo Ssekitto, a resident and local leader.
Others, however, were quick to disassociate themselves from the notion that DF represents Masaka as a whole, citing existing party allegiances.
“No one should impose a party on us just because it was founded by someone from Masaka,” said Ashiraf Mulasa, a vocal supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP). “I am with NUP, and others support different parties. We can’t all claim this is ours.”
Lukanga Majwala, a Democratic Party (DP) spokesperson in the region, was blunt in his criticism, questioning Mpuuga’s track record of party affiliations.
“Mpuuga stirred confusion in DP, then moved to NUP, and now he’s starting his own party. Let’s see how long this one lasts,” Majwala said. “Masaka already has strong parties. This new one may not survive.”
He added, “This is DP territory. Anyone who thinks they can just plant a party here is mistaken. We are ready to defend our ground.”
Despite skepticism, DF supporters say they are ready to mobilize, field candidates, and begin internal leadership elections.
