As Buganda Kingdom commemorates the 70th birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the region reflects on significant strides in socio-economic development under his reign.

Central to these advancements is the “Mwanyi Terimba” initiative, a transformative program aimed at revitalizing coffee farming and empowering local communities.

Launched in 2016 by Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, the “Mwanyi Terimba” campaign—aiming at spearheading the growing more coffee was a direct response to Kabaka Mutebi’s concern over pervasive poverty among his subjects.

The initiative encouraged widespread coffee cultivation, leading to a remarkable 60% increase in production over five years. Today, Buganda contributes approximately 40% of Uganda’s total coffee exports .

To further support farmers, the Kingdom established Mwanyi Terimba Limited in 2020. This company ensures fair pricing, promotes value addition, and facilitates bulk purchasing, thereby enhancing farmers’ incomes and livelihoods .

Recognizing the initiative’s impact, President Museveni contributed Shs 413 million to Mwanyi Terimba in 2024, aligning it with national wealth creation strategies .

Under Kabaka Mutebi’s leadership, Buganda Kingdom has made notable progress in health and education. The establishment of eight hospitals and multiple health centers, including facilities in Nsangi and Kalasa, has improved healthcare access. The kingdom also contributed Shs 172 million to the Rotary Nkozi Accident and Trauma Centre .

In education, the Kabaka Education Fund has provided bursaries to thousands of vulnerable children. Additionally, nursery schools have been constructed in different Buganda counties, laying a foundation for early childhood education .

The kingdom has invested in preserving its rich cultural heritage. Efforts include renovating royal palaces in Kireka, Nkoni, and Bamunanika, and restoring the Kasubi Tombs. The establishment of the Buganda Heritage Board and the introduction of the Miss Tourism competition further promote cultural awareness and tourism .

The annual Kabaka Birthday Run has become a significant event, drawing tens of thousands of participants. Focused on health awareness, the run has addressed issues like HIV/AIDS, fistula, and sickle cell disease. The 2023 run emphasized ending HIV/AIDS by 2030, contributing to increased testing and treatment uptake in the region .

As Kabaka Mutebi marks his 70th birthday, Buganda Kingdom’s commitment to development through initiatives like Mwanyi Terimba, healthcare improvements, educational support, and cultural preservation stands as a testament to effective leadership and community engagement.
