The Luwero Muslim District Joint Committee has dismissed its district chairperson, Ali Ndawula Ssekyanzi alias Wowooto, over allegations of gross indiscipline, inciting unrest, and spreading falsehoods against the national Muslim leadership.
The decision followed a petition filed by 16 members of the committee accusing Ndawula of making misleading statements that fueled protests against the Majlis Al Ulama the College of Eminent Sheikhs after the re-election of Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje as Mufti of Uganda.
The petition further accused Ndawula of publicly insulting the Mufti in a bid to tarnish his reputation for alleged personal gain.
The petition was addressed to Sheikh Ramadhan Twaha Mulindwa, the District Kadhi of Luwero, who summoned Ndawula to respond before the committee on April 3, 2025.
Ndawula, however, declined to appear, citing unpreparedness through his legal representatives.
Despite his absence, the session proceeded under Sheikh Mulindwa’s leadership, where all 26 members in attendance voted unanimously to remove Ndawula from office.
This marks the first such dismissal under the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Constitution amended in 2022.
In a press statement, Sheikh Mulindwa announced that Muhammad Matovu has been appointed as acting District Chairperson pending formal replacement procedures.
He emphasized that the impeachment was necessary to restore integrity and trust in the Muslim leadership, which he said had been undermined by individuals like Ndawula.
