The Kazo District Local Government Council has unveiled a Shs 25.16 billion budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, with education receiving the largest share at 42.4%.

The budget was announced during a council session at Kan House Conference Hall, chaired by Speaker Dan Nahura Bwamunyoga and Deputy Speaker Leah Munene.

Bwamunyoga emphasized the importance of unity in achieving the district’s development goals.

“The progress of Kazo District depends on our collective efforts. I thank both our political and technical teams for their dedication,” he said.

A major highlight of the meeting was the announcement by Kazo District Chairperson, Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, declaring the district free from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

“I am pleased to report that Kazo has successfully controlled Foot and Mouth Disease. This is a great milestone for our livestock sector and the livelihoods of our farmers,” Katugunda stated.

He also called for urgent environmental action, urging councillors to enact bylaws against charcoal burning.

“If we are serious about mitigating climate change, we must put an end to destructive practices like charcoal burning,” he said.

Presenting the budget, Secretary for Finance, Ham Rubainika emphasized the need for efficient implementation.

“Our focus must be on strategies that increase household incomes and improve the quality of life for our people,” he noted.

The education sector, which received the largest budget share, was widely supported by councillors.

They highlighted the district’s outstanding performance in the 2024 national examinations and pledged to maintain the momentum.

District Female Youth Councillor Katusime Susan Baramu urged leaders to stay informed about government programs.

“Many of our people miss out on life-changing opportunities simply because they are unaware. It is our duty to bridge this gap,” she said.

Meanwhile, Charles Kampikaho, representing the elderly, called for a more efficient payment system for older persons.

“Many elderly citizens struggle with long-distance travel just to access their payments. We need to streamline this process,” he appealed.

As Kazo District embarks on the 2025/2026 fiscal year, leaders remain committed to strengthening education, improving livelihoods, and tackling environmental challenges to ensure sustainable development for all residents.
