Pope of the Orthodox Church Arrives in Uganda for a Three-Day Visit

The Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Beatitude Pope Theodoros II, has arrived in Uganda for a three-day visit.
Upon landing at Entebbe International Airport, he was received by Archbishop Jeronymos Muzeeyi, members of the Orthodox Church, Egyptian Ambassador to Uganda Monzer Selim, and Members of Parliament, including Theodore Ssekikubo.
Speaking to the media, Pope Theodoros II expressed his joy at visiting Uganda, emphasizing Africa’s significance in the Orthodox faith.
He noted that the continent played a key role in the church’s early establishment in the eastern region.
He also spoke about the global challenges facing many nations, particularly war and oppression, highlighting the suffering of children who, he said, need God’s mercy and continuous prayers.
“Many nations around the world are experiencing wars, and many people, especially children, are suffering. They need the mercy of God and our prayers,” he said.
Pope Theodoros II commended Uganda’s Orthodox community for its efforts in spreading and strengthening the faith.
He paid tribute to Bishop Sparta Ssebanja Mukasa and the late Archbishop Jonah Lwanga for their contributions to the church’s growth in the country.
He also thanked the Egyptian government and its envoy in Uganda for facilitating his visit and ensuring a warm reception.
Archbishop Jeronymos Muzeeyi welcomed Pope Theodoros II, saying his visit symbolizes peace and unity.
“We are honored to receive His Beatitude Pope Theodoros II, and we believe his visit will bring blessings and strengthen the faith of the Orthodox Church in Uganda,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government, particularly President Yoweri Museveni, for supporting the Orthodox Church and facilitating the Pope’s visit.
Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo, who chaired the committee responsible for welcoming the Pope, described him as a strong advocate for peace and children’s rights.
“Pope Theodoros II is a man of peace who cares deeply for children and the oppressed. We expect his visit to bring great blessings and renewed commitment to justice,” he said.
Following his arrival, Pope Theodoros II proceeded to State House, where he is expected to meet with President Yoweri Museveni.
