Nearly two years of unrelenting conflict in Sudan have left over 30 million people nearly two-thirds of the population in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

In a statement shared via social media, the UN highlighted the severity of the crisis, citing mass displacement, an unprecedented hunger emergency, and immense human suffering across the country.

The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has devastated communities, disrupted essential services, and pushed millions into famine-like conditions.

Originally concentrated in Khartoum and Darfur, the war has now spread to other regions, triggering one of the largest displacement crises in recent history.

Over 8 million Sudanese have fled their homes, with many seeking refuge in neighboring countries, including Chad, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Uganda.

Uganda, already hosting over 1.7 million refugees, is struggling to accommodate the increasing numbers of Sudanese asylum seekers. Humanitarian agencies are warning of overcrowded settlements and dwindling resources.

“The situation is dire, and greater global support is critical to saving lives,” the UN stressed, calling for increased international humanitarian funding and unhindered access to deliver life-saving aid.

Despite ongoing relief efforts, severe security challenges and funding shortages continue to impede humanitarian operations. Aid agencies are urgently calling for a global response to prevent further catastrophe, as the war in Sudan shows no signs of abating.
