Moroto Municipality Member of Parliament Francis Lorika Adome has provided cash vouchers to more than 400 students in Karamoja to support their education.

The financial aid is intended to help students who recently passed the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) purchase scholastic materials or pay school fees.

Adome said the beneficiaries were selected from vulnerable households where parents struggle to support their children’s education due to financial hardship and poverty.

“This initiative is crucial in ensuring that children from disadvantaged backgrounds can continue with their studies despite economic challenges,” he said.

The support comes at a time when several NGOs that previously provided scholarships and educational aid have shut down due to funding cuts.

Karamoja continues to face food insecurity, poverty, and violent cattle raids, which have hindered education access. Most students in the region do not progress beyond Primary Seven.

In recent years, regional leaders have called for affirmative action to provide free and compulsory education for all school-going children in Karamoja.

Leaders argue that such a policy would help curb the recruitment of children into cattle raids, which have devastated the region for decades. However, the government has yet to implement this initiative.
