A youth in Kotido has voluntarily surrendered an illegal firearm.

Stephen Nyanga, a resident of Napereu Village, Nakapelimoru Sub County, handed over an SMG rifle, serial number 11592 BC, without any rounds of ammunition.

The surrender took place in the presence of local leaders and aligns with the ongoing presidential amnesty initiative, which encourages Karamojong youth to return firearms voluntarily.

The amnesty window was extended to provide an opportunity for those in possession of illegal guns to hand them over without facing legal consequences.

However, authorities have warned that individuals who fail to surrender their weapons and are later arrested will face prosecution in the courts of law.

Mike Longole, the Karamoja Police Spokesperson, has urged other youths to follow Nyanga’s example and return any illegal firearms.

"We encourage all youth to bring back the guns and join efforts for community development," Longole stated.
