President Museveni has praised Kanungu cadres for their steadfast commitment to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and their efforts in maintaining party unity in the district.

Speaking during the second day of his Parish Development Model (PDM) tour in the Kigezi Sub-region, Museveni underscored the importance of grassroots mobilization and community-driven initiatives in fostering national development.

Addressing a gathering in Kanungu, the president lauded local NRM pioneers for their dedication, particularly those who contributed Shs500 million towards the development of the Kanungu NRM Nyekundire ground.

He noted that their commitment to the party’s values had helped strengthen the NRM’s presence in both Kanungu and the broader Kigezi region.

“I want to appreciate all of you, especially those who started Nyekundire. The NRM cadres fought for the party at a time when some sought to divide it. I thank you because you refused and insisted on staying in the party, saying you would not allow any division in Kanungu or Kigezi at large,” Museveni said.

Amidst his praise for the cadres, the president also reaffirmed his commitment to upgrading the Kanyatorongo-Bwindi-Kisoro Road, a key route for tourism in the region.

He noted that the project is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and support economic growth in Kisoro and its surrounding areas.

“We shall work on Kanyatorongo-Bwindi-Kisoro Road. There are also two more roads in this region, including the Ishasha-Katunuru Road, which passes through the park, and we have it in our plans,” he added.

During the event, ICT Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and State Minister for Privatization and Investment Evelyne Anite called on Museveni to urgently address concerns of tea nursery bed operators in the region.

They reminded him of his earlier promise to return and discuss the issue, citing the economic difficulties faced by tea farmers due to falling prices and unpaid government dues for nursery tea beds.

“You told us that you will come back to talk about tea issues because most of our people are tea farmers. The prices have dropped, and those who had nursery tea beds are still demanding payment from the government,” the ministers emphasized.

They further expressed confidence that Museveni, as a leader who listens and resolves problems, would respond positively once he received the memo on tea farmers' compensation.

The ongoing Parish Development Model (PDM) tour seeks to assess the progress of the flagship government program, which aims to stimulate economic growth, improve livelihoods, and drive socio-economic transformation at the parish level.

Museveni has used the tour to rally local leaders and communities behind the initiative, urging them to embrace self-reliance and productivity.
