As political parties finalize preparations for the Kawempe North by-election, the Democratic Party (DP) has confirmed that four individuals, including three men and one woman, have expressed interest in carrying the party’s flag in the race to fill the vacant parliamentary seat.

DP Electoral Commission chairperson Kennedy Mutenyo revealed that only these four aspirants met the deadline for applications, following a public call for interested members to submit their bids.

While Mutenyo declined to name the aspirants Nile posts has established that among the four is John Bosco Mayinja and Claudius Katamba.

“The deadline for applications closed on Monday, 11th, and the party received applications from four people—three men and a woman,” Mutenyo told Nile Post in an interview.

He explained that the party’s executive committee will now vet the applications before officially announcing the flag bearer.

Mutenyo expressed confidence that DP’s candidate would stand out among contenders from other parties.

“We’ll have our candidate, and every other party will wish they had the same candidate,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the chosen aspirant would be "a resident of Kawempe who has grown up in the area", which he believes will be an advantage in the race.

DP joins the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), the National Unity Platform (NUP), and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), which have already declared their flag bearers.

The Kawempe North seat fell vacant following the passing of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who was elected in the 2021 general elections.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set February 26 and 27 as nomination dates, with polling scheduled for March 13.
