The Ministry of Works has commenced emergency upgrades on Ntabahara Hill, a notorious black spot along the Ibanda-Kabujogera-Mahyoro road, bringing relief to road users who have long struggled with its treacherous terrain.

The 25.5-kilometer road, vital for transporting cattle and agricultural produce among Kasese,Kitagwenda and Ibanda districts, has for years posed serious risks due to a large rock in the middle of the road and poor terrain.

Local leaders and residents had consistently raised concerns, with some even describing it as a "death trap" due to the numerous lives lost in accidents.

Juma Kaheru, the Mahyoro Sub County Chairperson, confirmed the road's dangers, saying, “Over 20 people have lost their lives at this spot.

The President had pledged to tarmac this road, but it has not yet been fulfilled. We are grateful that at least emergency works have begun.”

The road upgrade follows intensive lobbying by Dorothy Nyakato Nzibonera, who engaged the Minister of Works, Gen. Katumba Wamala, urging immediate intervention.

Speaking at the launch of the works, Nyakato commended the Minister for his swift action. “I appreciate Gen. Katumba Wamala for responding quickly by sending machines to work on the road. This intervention will make transport safer and more manageable for users,” she said.

Doreen Kukunda, a civil engineer from the Ministry of Works, confirmed that the ongoing works are temporary solutions aimed at easing movement in the short term.

“These are emergency works, more like first aid for the road, to make transport easier. However, to fully resolve the issue, we need to drill and remove the rock in the middle of the road so that vehicles can move smoothly,” Kukunda explained.

The ongoing intervention has been welcomed by local leaders and residents who hope for a permanent solution in the near future.

For now, the improvements signal a much-needed relief for traders, farmers, and travelers who rely on the route for their daily livelihoods.
