Former MP for Kawempe South, Mubarak Munyagwa has criticized the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) for endorsing singer Sadat Mukiiibi alias Kalifa Aganaga for the Kawempe North MP by-election.

Last week, the opposition party revealed Aganaga, the CEO of Bad Character Music, as their candidate to succeed the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, a decision that sparked mixed reactions.

Appearing on Sanyuka Television, Munyagwa stated that FDC's choice of Aganaga disrespects Buganda and creates an impression that there are no competent candidates from the region.

He expressed skepticism about whether FDC president Patrick Amuriat and general secretary Nandala Mafabi would support someone like Aganaga running for an MP position in their own regions (Eastern and Bugisu).

"There are individuals who disrespect Buganda and make us appear unreasonable. Would Amuriat endorse him in his own area? Would Nandala support a candidate from his region who has such disheveled hair? He doesn’t even seem to understand his political stance. His shoes and clothes were a mess. Did you see him wearing any colours that represent FDC?" Munyagwa questioned.

He further remarked, "They (FDC) seem to think that by endorsing any artist, the Baganda will be thrilled. Did you hear him deliver any sensible speech?"

At the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, FDC president Patrick Amuriat acknowledged the initial hesitations about selecting a candidate but ultimately affirmed their choice of Aganaga.

"We have spoken to our brother Aganaga, and we have learned that beneath those deadlocks, there is a competent leader, a great human," Amuriat said.

Aganaga, who was previously denied a National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket for Rubaga South in 2021 in favor of the current MP Aloysius Mukasa, has been vocal about his readiness to engage in politics with anyone willing to support him.

The Kawempe North MP seat became vacant last month following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away at Lubaga Hospital after weeks of hospitalisation.

Last month, the Electoral Commission announced that the by-election to fill the seat would take place on March 13, 2025.
