The race for the Rubaga South parliamentary seat has intensified as Habib Kayingo Buwembo announced his candidacy for the 2026 general elections.

Buwembo, who joins eight other contenders, aims to unseat the incumbent, Aloysious Mukasa.

The announcement was made during a gathering led by Councilor Emmanuel Kizza, who expressed confidence in Buwembo’s ability to represent the people effectively.

“As the people of Lubaga South, we have decided to bring someone who listens to our voice and takes it directly to the National Assembly,” Kizza said.

In his speech, Buwembo highlighted his motivation for joining the race.

He promised to prioritize the needs of the constituents, stating, "I am running for this seat to ensure that the people of Lubaga South are truly represented."

When asked about his plans if his party endorses another candidate, Buwembo remained resolute in his commitment to the race.

"I am ready to serve the people regardless of the party’s decision," he emphasized.

Residents of Lubaga South expressed dissatisfaction with the current representation, citing the need for stronger advocacy in Parliament.

“We feel our voice hasn’t been heard this term. We need someone who can make a real difference,” said one voter.

Meanwhile, some of Buwembo’s opponents welcomed his entry into the race.

Julius Katongole, a fellow aspirant, remarked, “The voters will decide who the right candidate is. It’s all part of democracy.”

As campaign posters flood the constituency and preliminary activities heat up, the race for Lubaga South promises to be one of the most competitive in the 2026 elections.
