Our process is very clear. As long as you are a registered member and meet all the qualifications, you can contest for any position be it President General, Secretary General, or any other

The Democratic Party (DP) has assured its members of free and fair internal elections, with the leadership pledging to respect the outcome of the forthcoming delegates’ conference.

Acting DP spokesperson, Ismail Kirya, dismissed concerns that party president Norbert Mao would cling to office, stressing that the leadership is prepared to hand over power if defeated.

“Our process is very clear. As long as you are a registered member and meet all the qualifications, you can contest for any position be it President General, Secretary General, or any other,” Kirya told Nile Post in an interview.

This assurance comes as Mao, who has been at the helm of DP since 2010, faces growing criticism from sections of the party over his leadership, which reached a boiling point after he signed a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ruling government.

The MoU deepened divisions within the party, with critics accusing Mao of betraying DP’s ideals.

Kirya reiterated that the leadership is committed to ensuring a credible electoral process, noting, “Our elections will be transparent.

Whoever garners the highest votes will be declared the winner. No one will remain in office after being defeated—that is not possible.”

Calling for unity, Kirya urged party members to move beyond past disagreements and actively participate in rebuilding the party.

“Right now is the time to focus on restructuring the party. Let us bury the disagreements of the past four years and concentrate on the Democratic Party’s current agenda,” he said, encouraging members to embrace democratic processes.
