People have been asking me if I would take a position as a minister in the current government. I tell them no because I know I can’t do what’s right in the current system

Renowned cartoonist and professor at Makerere University, Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, has publicly rejected the idea of accepting any government position, citing ethical concerns with the current system.

In an appearance on NBS TV, Dr. Ssentongo addressed recurring questions about whether he would consider taking up a ministerial role in the present government.

"People have been asking me if I would take a position as a minister in the current government. I tell them no because I know I can’t do what’s right in the current system," he said, underlining his refusal to compromise his values.

The respected artist and educator went on to explain his views on positions of authority, such as judges or police officers, stating that assuming such roles means fully understanding the ethical and professional responsibilities involved.

"If you take on a position as a judge or police officer, it also means that you have understood what you are doing and what you're in for," he added.

Despite being offered several positions, Dr. Ssentongo revealed that he had declined these opportunities, as he believed the nature of these roles would restrict his ability to act according to his principles.

"I have been granted opportunities to work in certain positions, which I rejected because I knew the nature of those positions wouldn’t allow me to do what I would otherwise feel free and the rightful thing to do," he explained.
