Police have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which thugs armed with pangas attacked two betting companies in Nateete and robbed an unspecified amount of money.
According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the thugs attacked two Fortebet betting centres in Nateete at around 11:30am on Monday.
“It is alleged that the group armed with pangas attacked a Fortebet betting point along Nateete-Ndeba road and robbed un specified amount of money. From there, they then proceeded to another Fortebet point at Nateete Business Center along the same road and still robbed more money,” Owoyesigyire said.
He noted that while the thugs were still in the building, police at Nateete was informed and a team was dispatched to respond to the incident.
“Upon seeing the police, one Benard Kayongo Nadumba who was on the ground tried to run away but was shot at in order to neutralize him. He fell down where he was arrested and then rushed to Mulago Hospital where he was pronounced dead after some hours.”
Owoyesigyire said Nadumba’s associates fled the scene with the cash they had robbed from the two betting points but said efforts to trace them are currently ongoing.
He said a case of aggravated robbery has been registered and statements obtained from witness while a team of Police ICT officers is also on the ground to retrieve CCTV footage from both scenes as inquiries continue.
Police have in the past urged owners of betting points to heighten security at these facilities to avert such incidents of robbery.
