Police in Kajjansi Division have arrested Mumbere Brian, alias Natamba, the primary suspect behind a series of motor vehicle number plate thefts in the area.

The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in combating the rising cases of number plate theft, which has alarmed motorists in and around Kajjansi.

According to a statement by Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the arrest of Mumbere in January, 2025, led to an intelligence-driven operation in Zana, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.

During the operation, officers recovered 16 number plates allegedly hidden by the suspect, which he is believed to have used to extort money from victims desperate to recover their stolen property.

Subsequent interrogations revealed that Mumbere had concealed more stolen number plates in different locations within and outside Kajjansi Division.

On January 4, 2025, a joint operation conducted by police teams from Kajjansi and Nateete Division led to the recovery of 15 additional number plates from areas such as Kisigula, Katale, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.

In total, police believe the suspect stole over 30 number plates in just one month. “The recovery of these plates is a significant step in addressing the issue of number plate theft, which can have serious consequences, including identity theft and misuse,” Onyango noted.

The suspect’s modus operandi reportedly involved stealing number plates, hiding them, and then leaving contact information demanding payment for their return.

The practice, which has become increasingly common, not only inconveniences vehicle owners but also poses potential risks of criminal activities using stolen number plates.

Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The recovered number plates are being kept as evidence while investigations continue, and police are working to ensure that all affected individuals are given back their stolen car registration plates.

The arrest and recovery of the stolen number plates highlight the police's commitment to tackling such criminal activities and restoring safety for vehicle owners in the region.
