UMSC denounces alleged leadership change as fraudulent, reaffirms Mubaje’s authority

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has dismissed claims of a leadership change within the council, describing them as fraudulent and orchestrated by self-seeking individuals aiming to destabilise the organisation.

In a statement, UMSC Secretary General Haji Abbas Muluubya clarified that Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje remains the Mufti of Uganda, and Prof. Dr. Muhammadi Lubega Kisambira continues as the National Chairman of the council.

The council accused Issa Gule of circulating forged documents bearing UMSC branding and falsely presenting himself as a legitimate office holder.

According to the UMSC, Gule has been distributing these missives to government offices, embassies, and banks in an attempt to establish a parallel leadership structure.

“These individuals’ actions constitute serious criminal offenses, including fraud, impersonation, and unauthorised use of corporate identity,” the statement read.

“Such acts cause significant harm to the reputation and operations of the council.”

The UMSC also warned that Gule's actions could incite violence and disrupt the peaceful coexistence of the Muslim community in Uganda.

The council urged stakeholders, including government agencies, embassies, and the general public, to disregard all claims and communications from Gule, labeling them as unconstitutional and illegitimate.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional leadership and peaceful coexistence, appealing to the public to seek accurate information exclusively from the authorized office of the UMSC Secretary General.

This comes just days after the UMSC concluded its “UMSC at 50+” celebrations, which ran from December 4 to 12, 2024, commemorating five decades of its existence and contributions to the Muslim community in Uganda.

Muluubya emphasised the importance of maintaining order and stability within the council, warning against any attempts to exploit unconstitutional means to disrupt its operations.

He has called on the government, security agencies, and stakeholders to ensure peace at the council headquarters and beyond.
