Renowned petroleum expert Dozith Abeinomugisha passes away at 59

The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) has announced with profound sorrow the passing of Mr. Dozith Abeinomugisha, a distinguished petroleum expert and leader, on 16th December 2024, at the age of 59.

Mr. Abeinomugisha leaves behind an enduring legacy of unwavering dedication and remarkable leadership in Uganda’s oil and gas sector, where his expertise played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s energy development journey.

Holding a Master of Science in Petroleum Geoscience from Royal Holloway College, University of London, Mr. Abeinomugisha was widely regarded as a beacon of knowledge and commitment.

His career was marked by significant milestones that elevated Uganda’s standing in the global petroleum landscape.

Before joining the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) in 2017, Mr. Abeinomugisha served as Assistant Commissioner for Refining in the Midstream Petroleum Department at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD).

His expertise was instrumental in laying the foundations for Uganda’s petroleum advancements.

Among his most notable contributions, Mr. Abeinomugisha was part of Uganda’s technical team that, in 2016, “assessed the suitability and selection of the pipeline route for exporting Uganda’s crude oil.”

Additionally, he played a key role in negotiations that concluded “agreements required by the licensed oil companies to take Final Investment Decisions for the country’s Oil and Gas projects between 2019 and 2021,” according to the PAU.

His career began in 2000 at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, where he specialised in geological mapping and managing petroleum exploration licenses.

From 2005 to 2012, Mr. Abeinomugisha served as President of the Geological Society of Uganda (GSU). During this period, he tirelessly worked to amplify Uganda’s footprint in the global petroleum sector through cutting-edge research and impactful publications.

His scholarly work was featured in various international journals, cementing his reputation as a thought leader in petroleum geoscience.

Officials described Mr. Abeinomugisha as a pillar of the sector. His immense contributions to Uganda’s oil and gas industry, coupled with his visionary leadership and steadfast dedication, leave a void that will be deeply felt across the energy community.

“His expertise, dedication, and leadership have shaped Uganda’s energy journey, and his absence will be profoundly mourned,” read a statement from PAU.

Mr. Abeinomugisha’s life was dedicated to propelling Uganda’s petroleum sector to new heights. As the nation mourns his passing, his legacy as a trailblazer and mentor will continue to inspire future generations of energy professionals.
