Mubaje acknowledges Idi Amin’s contribution as UMSC celebrates 50 years

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has acknowledged the significant contribution of former President Idi Amin in fostering Muslim unity in Uganda.

Speaking during the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council's (UMSC) Golden Jubilee celebrations at Old Kampala Secondary School on December 12, 2024, Mubaje credited Amin for providing land that served as a foundation for the construction of the Old Kampala Mosque, a symbol of Muslim solidarity.

“Muslims began to unite under one umbrella in the 1970s, largely due to the intervention of President Idi Amin,” said Mubaje.

He further highlighted the collaborative efforts of Amin, Libya’s late leader Muammar Gaddafi, and President Museveni in the development of the mosque, emphasising their roles in shaping the Muslim community in Uganda.

The celebrations, attended by government officials, religious leaders, and thousands of Muslim faithful, marked 52 years of the UMSC's existence, focusing on unity, progress, and gratitude.

Mubaje praised President Museveni for his support in advancing the Muslim cause, including facilitating Libyan support for the mosque's construction and funding constitutional reforms within the council.

“The structure we see today is the result of efforts by three people the late President Idi Amin, late President Muammar Gaddafi, and President Museveni,” Mubaje stated.
