Prominent rapper Gereson Wabuyi, popularly known as Gravity Omutujju, has defended his music style against allegations of vulgarity, asserting that his approach is creatively tailored to resonate with his target audience.

“There are some words which are not allowed to be used in this world, and when you speak, it is a crime. If those words exist, they should explain them to us,” Gravity said in an interview with local media.

“What I know is all words are allowed to be used, but it’s about how and where you use them.”

The rapper, often criticised for his explicit lyrics, rejected claims that his music is inappropriate.

Instead, he emphasized that his fans appreciate his unique approach, which he described as relatable and creative.

“I found out that my target audience prefers my style of music, and this is why I use words that people term as vulgar. If my style was not good, my fans wouldn’t be supporting me,” Gravity explained.

He further dismissed the notion that his music promotes vulgarity, arguing that creativity is key to his artistic expression.

“An artist is supposed to be creative and come out with something unique. One is allowed to use any word and express themselves in any manner,” he added.

Gravity Omutujju’s defense comes as the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) has taken action against musicians accused of promoting vulgarity in their music. On December 3, 2024, UNCC’s Executive Director, Phina Mugerwa (Masanyalaze), summoned Gravity and fellow artist Lil Pazo Lunabe for a meeting to address concerns over their lyrical content.

UNCC cited specific songs, including Gravity’s Okwepicha, Enyama, Doozi, and the controversial Omunio, alongside Lunabe’s tracks Enkudi and Ensuju, as examples of content that undermine Uganda’s cultural integrity.

“All this content does not align with Ugandan norms, culture, and the creative sector as a whole,” Mugerwa stated.

Gravity has faced backlash before for songs like Doctor and Okwepicha, which were criticized for their explicit themes. His latest release, Omunio, has drawn even sharper criticism, with some social media users calling on government authorities to ban the song due to its explicit lyrics.

Despite the criticism, Gravity Omutujju continues to maintain a loyal fan base, arguing that his music reflects real-life experiences and resonates with his audience.
