Masaka police have successfully rescued Mark Ssenkumba, the 28-year-old son of CBS journalist Tomusange Kayinja, who was kidnapped last Thursday. The victim was found alive in Kyandila village, Nkozi District, and reunited with his family today.

On Saturday, Kayinja reported the kidnapping of his son to Masaka police. According to him, the kidnappers initially demanded UGX 3 million to disclose the location of his son’s body.

“They told me my son had already been killed and demanded money to reveal the location of his body,” Kayinja said. Distraught, he sought police assistance to locate his son, fearing the worst.

“When I discovered my son had been killed, I went to the police, hoping they could help me locate his body,” he added.

Ssenkumba recounted his harrowing experience, revealing that he was abducted while traveling to Masaka to visit his father. He described being tortured for four days before his rescue.

“They denied me even drinking water since my abduction. I have been fasting, and they subjected me to daily beatings,” Ssenkumba said, his voice filled with emotion.

Masaka police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye detailed the operation that led to Ssenkumba’s rescue, commending the officers involved for their dedication.

“I commend all the officers involved in the search for Tomusange Kayinja’s son. Their efforts have brought relief in a case that had sparked widespread fear,” Kasirye said.

The police have since heightened operations to curb criminal activity in the area, especially as the holiday season approaches. Kasirye urged residents to remain vigilant against rising crime.

“As we approach the holidays, security forces have warned people to be vigilant against criminals who want to take what they have not earned,” he noted.

Masaka is notorious for a surge in criminal activity during the festive season, with theft and other crimes often resulting in loss of life. Police efforts have been intensified to address these concerns.

“We have stepped up operations to prevent any form of crime,” Kasirye assured.

The rescue of Ssenkumba is a rare triumph in the fight against kidnappings and violent crime in the region, offering a glimmer of hope to residents as law enforcement ramps up its presence to ensure public safety.

The police have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens and bringing perpetrators of such crimes to justice.
