Ibanda University (IU) has celebrated a significant milestone as 3,161 students graduated during its eighth graduation ceremony, marking the largest cohort since the university's inception in 2013.
The event, held in Ibanda District, showcased the institution’s growing influence in advancing higher education in Uganda.
This year’s graduates included 1,892 females and 1,269 males, reflecting a notable achievement in gender representation.
Speaking at the event held at the university grounds, the chief guest Aggrey David Kibenge, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, applauded the university and parents for prioritizing the education of girls.
“The fact that more females graduated than males demonstrates the success of the government’s call to prioritize the education of the girl child. It’s an inspiring example of progress,” Kibenge said.
Prof. James Samson Opolot, the University Vice Chancellor, praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for fostering an enabling environment for private universities.
“The proactive reforms in policy and regulation have greatly enhanced the growth of private universities. We are grateful for this support,” he stated.
Prof. Opolot highlighted some of the challenges private universities face in delivering quality education.
“Policies such as taxation on educational technologies like computers and the high cost of internet are hindering our efforts to provide top-notch education, research, and innovation,” he noted.
The university chancellor, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, urged graduates to use their education for community transformation.
“Go out and identify the challenges and opportunities in your communities. Use your education to bring change. It’s not just about having academic papers but about applying your knowledge in the real world,” he advised.
Former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Edward Kale Kayihura who was the guest speaker, commended the founders of the university for their vision.
“The establishment of Ibanda University brought education closer to the youth, creating new opportunities for them and their communities,” he remarked.
Kibenge further encouraged graduates to differentiate themselves in the competitive job market. “As products of Ibanda University, you need to develop a value proposition and personal brand. Employers today are seeking individuals who can add value and innovate,” he emphasized.
Ibanda University, founded in 2013 through a private partnership, has grown to become a leading institution dedicated to nurturing future leaders and innovators.
The ceremony was marked by joy, pride, and a collective commitment to building a brighter future for Ugandan communities.
