Govt urged to rethink Teacher's Bill

A section of lawmakers has appealed to the government to reconsider the National Teachers Bill 2024, citing concerns that it may undermine the education sector if passed into law.

MPs Eddie Kwizera of Bukimbiri and Luttamaguzi Ssemakula of Nakaseke South are among those advising the government to prioritize securing funds to increase the salaries of arts teachers, rather than mandating that teachers possess degrees.

"The bill falls short of addressing the welfare of teachers, particularly those in the arts sector," said MP Eddie Kwizera.

"Instead of focusing on degrees, the government should prioritize increasing the salaries of arts teachers to improve the overall quality of education in the country."

The National Teachers Bill 2024, sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Sports, aims to professionalize and standardize the teaching profession.

However, lawmakers have hit a dead end in processing the bill, with many advising the government to consider withdrawing it.

"We are concerned that the bill will affect the education sector negatively," said MP Luttamaguzi Ssemakula.

"We urge the government to reconsider its position and prioritize the welfare of teachers."

The bill has also been criticized for introducing a mandatory renewal of teachers' license every four years. Lawmakers argue that this provision will only add to the burden of teachers, who are already struggling with low salaries.

Workers MP Charles Bakabulindi announced that Workers MPs will meet with all teachers' unions next week to discuss the way forward on the matter.

"We will engage with the teachers' unions to find a solution that works for everyone," he said.

As the debate on the National Teachers Bill 2024 continues, it remains to be seen whether the government will heed the concerns of lawmakers and reconsider its position on the bill.
