The former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, has officially unveiled the Democratic Alliance as he prepares to establish himself in the political arena ahead of 2026 elections.
He made the announcement to hundreds who had gathered at Malibu Gardens in Kampala on Friday.
Speaking to the audience, which included friends and some former members of the National Unity Platform and the Democratic Party, Mpuuga explained that the Democratic Alliance will initially function as a civic platform before evolving into an electoral platform.
"In a few months, we are consulting; it will be an electoral platform," he said.
He noted that the Democratic Alliance promises to be a home for all Ugandans especially the youth who have been dreaming to see redefined politics.
"I have proposed reforms in our electoral system, I have also proposed reforms and amendments in our constitution. Some people are saying, why is he the one bringing the reforms and amendments? Why then, aren't you the ones who brought them?" he said.
"This country is a suffering nation. It is a sick country. People are sick, tired and injured. People need healing and it must come from our common unity of purpose to deliver one single mission; saving the country from going under the abyss," he added.
Mpuuga's latest move comes months after his fallout with Robert Kyagulanyi and the National Unity Platform (NUP), which resulted in his suspension from the country's largest opposition party due to allegations of corruption.
Mpuuga faced significant criticism from the NUP, which accused him of "corruption and abuse of office" after he received a Shs500 million 'service reward' from Parliament.
In response, Mpuuga claimed he was being targeted by a "small group with personal interests" attempting to obscure the larger issues surrounding the party's lack of transparency in its management.
Since then, Mpuuga and NUP have been engaged in a series of political conflicts.
However, today Mpuuga emphasised that his new platform is open to collaborating with everyone, including the Kavule-based NUP party, regardless of past differences.
"We shall work with everyone, even those who are not our friends as long as we going on the same journey. We shall not close any doors to anyone. We shall even knock on the doors of our enemies for the sake of this country," Mpuuga said.
"We have our friends we have left at Kavule. They have their issues. We have Uganda to save. They will save themselves and we shall save them if they fail to save themselves." he added.
