Vice President Jessica Alupo has emphasised the role of debate in nurturing well-rounded individuals, calling on youth to engage in discussions on critical societal issues.

She highlighted debate as a tool for fostering tolerance, acceptance, and research-driven argumentation, key skills for leadership and advocacy.

Alupo's remarks, delivered by Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo, the Minister of State for Higher Education, came during the launch of the revised edition of The Winning Debate: Public Speaking Redefined, authored by Fredrick Musiimenta.

She noted that with over 75% of Uganda’s population under 30 and the country grappling with one of the highest youth unemployment rates in Sub-Saharan Africa, debate and public speaking could play a vital role in empowering young people to achieve their aspirations.

“This book sheds light on the transformative power of effective communication skills in shaping future leaders,” Alupo said.

“It is a valuable resource for anyone passionate about fostering critical thinking and eloquence in our youth.”

The book, approved by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), is designed to build confidence and enhance communication skills for students, educators, and professionals alike.

Musiimenta highlighted that it is suitable for learners across all levels, from upper primary to post-university.

“This book outlines the history of debate, debate formats, and techniques for mastering public speaking,” Musiimenta explained.

“It’s designed to help anyone whether a beginner or a seasoned debater compete effectively at all levels, including national platforms,"he added.

Musiimenta, who also heads the Uganda Dialogue Arena (UDA), noted that the lack of locally available literature on debate inspired him to compile the book.

He expressed hope that it would serve as a lasting resource for fostering critical thinking and advocacy among young people in Uganda.

The launch coincides with Musiimenta’s Green Schools Initiative, a national debate championship focused on combating climate change. Il

In collaboration with Vision Group, the initiative encourages secondary school students to propose innovative solutions to environmental challenges, such as reducing carbon emissions and finding alternatives to firewood use.

“The Green Schools debates have helped students not only develop their debating skills but also propose practical ways to combat climate change,” Musiimenta said.

Alupo praised Musiimenta’s dedication to youth empowerment and recalled her first encounter with him in 2011 during a youth event in Western Uganda.

She also commended Dr. Muyingo for contributing the book’s foreword, affirming its relevance for audiences of all ages.

Encouraging Ugandans to embrace non-violent advocacy, Alupo said the book has the potential to ignite a passion for effective communication and leadership in Uganda and beyond.
