Chan Receives Full Medical Support After NBS TV Coverage
Isaiah Chan Kiplangat

Following the story of Isaiah Kiplangat Chan, a 14-year-old pupil from Kapchorwa, covered by NBS TV on November 6, 2024, well-wishers have come together to offer full medical support for the boy’s vision challenges.

The initiative, which includes funding an eye check-up and covering necessary treatments such as glasses or surgery, has been made possible through a partnership with Tonny Tumukunde, founding partner at Tumukunde & Co. Advocates, and Lapaire Group.

In an exclusive interview, Tonny Tumukunde, founding partner at Tumukunde & Co. Advocates, explained how he became involved in supporting Chan.

He shared that after seeing the emotional story on NBS TV, he contacted the station and was informed that Chan’s primary concern was his eyesight.

Tumukunde, moved by the love Chan has for his mother and the family’s struggles, decided to partner with Lapaire to ensure the boy receives the medical care he needs to continue his education without difficulty.

The medical team will assess his condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment, with all expenses covered.

Oliver Mwanko, Senior Public Relations and Communications Manager at Lapaire Group, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to eye care.

He noted that this is the second time they have been involved in such efforts, following a similar case assisted by another journalist from NBS.

Mwanko also emphasized the growing need for eye care due to lifestyle changes, especially the increase in screen time among children.

He cited the World Health Organization’s estimate that by 2050, half of the world’s population will experience eye problems.

This trend, he said, is largely due to the increased use of gadgets, which is affecting children’s vision at an early age.

As a result, more young people are requiring glasses.

Benefactors commended NBS TV for its role in highlighting impactful stories and noted that this was not the first time the station had catalyzed positive change.

They expressed hope that this initiative will not only help Chan but also raise awareness about the importance of eye care for children across the country.

The team is optimistic that this gesture will ensure Chan’s smooth transition into secondary school and inspire other Ugandans to offer support to those in need.
