International climate lawyer Anete Garoza is a new board member of the Next Media

The Latvian is a celebrated public speaker and a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, recognised for her dynamic contributions to climate action and sustainable development.

The Next Media has appointed Anete Garoza, an international climate lawyer and Vice Chair of the Carbon Markets Association of Uganda, to its board of directors.

Ms Garoza, the co-founder and Chief Climate Officer at 1MTN (One Million Ton Nation), is a trailblazer in climate advocacy, international law, and sustainable development.

Her appointment to the Board signals a transformative era for Next Media as it aligns its mission with global sustainability and innovation trends.

The Latvian is a celebrated public speaker and a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, recognised for her dynamic contributions to climate action and sustainable development.

Ms Garoza's dedication to driving meaningful change has earned her high-seats at major global events such as COP27, COP29, the World Economic Forum, the Africa Climate Summit 2023, and New York Climate Week.

"These platforms provide opportunities to highlight carbon removal project development, nature-based solutions, and advocating for social co-benefits in carbon credit frameworks," she says.

Coming from a family deeply rooted in the forest industry, she possesses an intrinsic understanding of nature's restorative power.

Her work with 1MTN embodies her belief that addressing climate change requires effective, scalable solutions that restore ecosystems while uplifting local communities.

As a new board member, Ms Garoza is set to infuse Next Media with her unparalleled expertise in sustainability, climate resilience, and the intersection of media and social impact.

Her presence comes at a pivotal time when media organisations are increasingly called to play a role in shaping public narratives on climate change, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.

With her background in organizing platforms like the East African Carbon Market Forum, she  is expected to leverage her global networks to position Next Media as a hub for conversations that drive change.

Ms Garoza's work is not just about carbon reduction; it’s about empowering people. Through 1MTN, she has demonstrated that meaningful climate action can coexist with local economic growth and community empowerment.

The Board of the Next Media is chaired by Mr Rogers Baguma, with Ms Susan Kitariko as a non-executive director and vice chairperson.

Other members include Mr Kin Kariisa, the Group chief executive, Mr Joe Kigozi, the chief of strategy and deputy chief executive, and Mr Obadia Ismail, the company secretary and chief of Legal and Regulatory Compliance.

The other non-executive directors on the board include Mr Isaac Ruccigango, a member of Audit,Risk and Finance Committee, Mr Orlando Lyomu, a member of Audit,Risk and Finance Committee, and Asmahaney Saad, a member of Governance Nominations and Compensations Committee.
