Kamwenge District Speaker Gerald Twebaze has called for the establishment of formal mechanisms to honor the contributions of local leaders who pass away, ensuring their legacies are preserved for future generations.
Twebaze made the appeal during a special council session on Monday, held to pay tribute to the late Peter Bazira Male, a councillor from Kichwamba Sub-county in Kabarole District.
In his address, Twebaze described Bazira as a visionary leader whose unwavering commitment to community development left an indelible mark.
He emphasised the need for lasting tributes, such as monuments or other symbolic gestures, to recognise leaders who have dedicated their lives to public service.
“It is only fitting that councillors and other leaders who pass on are officially eulogised and their contributions highlighted,” Twebaze said. “This not only honors their memory but also inspires others to embrace the values of service and dedication.”
Twebaze, who also serves as the Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) Speaker’s representative for the western region, urged district councils nationwide to adopt structured ways of celebrating their fallen leaders. He noted that creating formal recognition mechanisms would motivate future leaders and ensure that the impact of exceptional individuals is never forgotten.
“District councils should prioritise initiatives that preserve the legacies of those who have worked tirelessly to uplift their communities,” he said. “Honouring them is not just a celebration of their achievements but also a reminder of the value of selfless leadership.”
The late Bazira was praised for his technical expertise and his ability to address community needs effectively. Twebaze described him as a model of local governance, combining knowledge with a passion for service.
Council members at the session echoed Twebaze’s sentiments, with many commending Bazira’s dedication to his constituents. They acknowledged his passing as a significant loss, not only to Kabarole District but also to the communities he served with distinction.
In addition to calling for tributes, Twebaze proposed the documentation of exceptional leaders’ contributions, ensuring their stories are preserved for posterity.
The session concluded with a unanimous resolution to explore ways of implementing Twebaze’s proposals. Council members agreed that formalising tributes to fallen leaders would foster unity, inspire service, and strengthen the bond between leaders and their communities.
The late Peter Bazira Male’s legacy was honoured with heartfelt eulogies, serving as a call to action for leaders to prioritise integrity, dedication, and a commitment to improving the lives of those they serve.
