State Minister for Energy Phiona Nyamutoro has emphasized Uganda's commitment to responsible mining practices at the Seventh International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Juba, South Sudan.

The conference brought together 12 member states under the theme, "A Harmonised Regional approach for Mineral Value addition and Cross-border trade for the maximisation of Benefits from Mineral Resources and promotion of peace and stability".

"As a region, we face significant challenges, particularly in illegal exploitation of natural resources," Ms Nyamutoro noted.

"To address this, we must prioritize exploration to understand our mineral wealth and integrate environmental and social governance principles into our mining, processing, and trade operations."

Uganda has already made strides in this direction with its Mining and Minerals Policy, 2018, which aims to develop the mining industry through increased investment, value addition, national participation, and revenue generation.

The policy also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and responsible mining practices.

Ms Nyamutoro stressed the importance of collective action and shared responsibility in transforming the region's mineral resources.

"With collective action, we have the power to maximize benefits for our people and Africa at large."

By working together, ICGLR member states can ensure that their mineral resources are harnessed for the benefit of all, while promoting sustainable development and regional stability.
