Sometimes, youth seats on councils are occupied by older individuals who hold on to the position well beyond the age of 35. That needs to be changed

Members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from Greater Masaka, forming the ‘NRM Foot Soldiers Greater Masaka’ group, held a meeting today with  Godfrey Kiwanda Ssubi, the party’s Vice President for Buganda Region, at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala. The purpose of the gathering was to strategise on mobilisation efforts for the 2026 elections.

The group, led by Chairman Damian Kabuye, explained that their formation followed the NUP’s victory in securing the majority of seats in the region during the 2021 elections.

“Honestly, 2021 left our region politically altered. Many of our members lost their seats, and the party lost its influence. We decided to begin mobilizing well ahead of time,” Kabuye said.

The group includes leaders from Masaka, Kyotera, Kalungu, Rakai, Bukomansimbi, Sembabule, Kalangala, and other districts in the Greater Masaka area.

During the meeting, Kiwanda urged the group to actively involve more youth in their organisational structures to win back support from the opposition.

“Sometimes, youth seats on councils are occupied by older individuals who hold on to the position well beyond the age of 35. That needs to be changed,” he commented.

The group also requested that Hon. Kiwanda become their patron, a role he agreed to take on. He also promised to help organize a fundraising initiative to secure a vehicle for their operations.

Furthermore, Kiwanda emphasised that the NRM lost 22 seats in Buganda during the 2021 elections due to divided loyalties, with several candidates refusing to step down after losing primaries. He urged the leaders to unite in order to avoid repeating this situation in the future.
