Law students from Bishop Stuart University have launched a legal awareness campaign in Ntambazi Parish, Kazo Sub County, aimed at empowering local residents with vital knowledge about wills and land rights.

Organised by the Bishop Stuart University Law Society, this initiative seeks to mitigate conflicts over inheritance and land—common causes of domestic violence and disputes within the community.

At the event, Recheal Ninsiima, vice president of the Bishop Stuart Law Society, underscored the importance of understanding inheritance laws and land rights as a means to prevent family and community conflicts.

"Many of the disputes we see in our communities stem from a lack of knowledge about basic laws governing property and inheritance," she explained.

"By equipping residents with this knowledge, we hope to create a more harmonious society where people respect each other's rights."

The awareness campaign addressed crucial topics, including the importance of drafting a will, which can clarify property distribution and reduce family disagreements after a loved one’s passing.

Ninsiima emphasised that having a will is essential for ensuring a fair and orderly transfer of assets, stating, "Wills are vital because they protect the interests of both the deceased and their heirs, reducing potential conflicts."

Annitah Atuheirwe, a law lecturer at Bishop Stuart University, praised the initiative for its dual purpose of community outreach and enhancing student learning.

"This initiative not only educates residents about their legal rights but also allows our students to identify critical issues affecting communities," Atuheirwe noted.

"It’s a practical way for students to apply their legal knowledge while gaining insight into the real challenges that people face."

Atuheirwe further pointed out that this initiative offers students a unique opportunity to engage directly with the community, bridging the gap between theoretical education and practical problem-solving.

"By interacting with these residents, our students are developing a deeper understanding of the issues that lead to conflict, which will ultimately make them better legal practitioners," she added.

Residents expressed gratitude for the legal guidance, acknowledging that the knowledge gained would help them make informed decisions regarding property and inheritance.

"We are thankful to the Bishop Stuart law students for bringing this knowledge to us," said one local resident.

"Now we have a better understanding of our rights, and I believe this will help reduce conflicts in our community."

The campaign was well-received, with residents emphasising that increased legal awareness could prevent misunderstandings in families and communities.

"Knowing our rights helps us resolve issues peacefully and avoid unnecessary disputes," another resident shared. "We hope this initiative continues to benefit more people."

The law students aspire for the initiative to create a lasting impact on the community, contributing to a peaceful and informed society.

By empowering residents with legal knowledge, the Bishop Stuart University Law Society is fostering a stronger sense of justice and respect for property rights within the local community.
