PICTORIAL: Police battles with supporters in Bobi Wine's home town

Police was on Thursday involved in running battles with supporters of incarcerated Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine.

Kyagulanyi was arrested on Tuesday following chaos in Arua where Kassiano Wadri supporters are said to have blocked and stoned President Museveni’s convoy.

On Thursday, the legislator’s supporters in Kamwokya, his home town staged demonstrations to  demand for his release.

The group set bonfires and blocking Old Kira road prompting police led by Kira road DPC Michael Kasigire to swing into action arresting a number of protesters.

Police would later fire teargas to calm the situation as the supporters demanded to know the whereabouts of their son.

Earlier, the singer cum politician had been quietly charged by the General Court Martial in Gulu and only two people including his lawyers Medard Sseggona and Asuman Basaalirwa were allowed in court.

“Only myself   and Sseggona have been allowed into court martial. We shall brief you,” Basalirwa said.

The group had earlier complained of being denied access to Bobi Wine.

According to police, chaos erupted when Kassiano Wadri’s  supporters tried to block the presidential motorcade as President Museveni left Arua Boma  prompting security forces to fire teargas and bullets in the air to ‘calm’ the situation.

The president was being chauffeured to Pokea Primary School to board his chopper after campaigning for Nusura Tiperu, the NRM candidate.

“One of the president’s cars was attacked and smashed by the hooligans that were donning colours of one of the contestants in the election, Kassiano Wadri,”Kayima said.

Over 30 people including MPs Kassiano Wadri, Kyagulanyi, Paul Mwiru,Gerard Karuhanga and Michael Mabikke(former MP) were arrested and on Thursday were  arraigned before the Gulu Chief Magistrates  court and later remanded over treason charges.
