UCC shuts down 11 radio stations over unethical content
This move follows investigation into the content broadcasted by these stations, which uncovered several breaches of the broadcasting code of conduct.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has taken decisive action by shutting down 11 radio stations across the country due to violations of ethical and regulatory standards.
This move follows an in-depth investigation into the content broadcasted by these stations, which uncovered several breaches of the broadcasting code of conduct.
The stations were found to have aired unethical programming that contravened the guidelines set by the UCC.
Additionally, many of the affected stations had failed to comply with their licensing agreements, further prompting their closure.
Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the UCC, stressed the importance of media responsibility in upholding the commission’s regulations.
“We cannot allow any station to operate outside the law. The closure is a reminder to all broadcasters that their content and operations must meet the required ethical standards,” he stated.
The UCC emphasized that broadcasters have a duty to ensure their content does not harm the public, incite violence, or spread misinformation.
The commission also assured that it will continue monitoring all media outlets to ensure compliance with its regulatory framework.
While the stations remain closed for now, the UCC has indicated that it is open to reinstating them if they rectify the issues identified during the investigation.
