Mubende district headquarters is on Buganda's land - Luwekula

The Kabaka's representative in Buwekula County, one of the 18 counties comprising Buganda Kingdom, has confirmed that the district leadership lacks accurate information about the ownership of the land where the Mubende District and Buwekula County headquarters are located, specifically at Kaweeri Village, Mubende Municipality.

Previously, the district Chairperson for Mubende, Michael Ntambi Muhereza, assured the district council that Buganda does not own the land at Kaweeri, claiming it belongs to the district.

“I reached out to the Solicitor General, and he assured us this land is owned by Mubende, so Buganda doesn’t own this land,” Ntambi stated.

The dispute began last year after Buwekula County authorities sold marram to a construction company, China Railway No.3, from the same land, which left the district chairperson uncomfortable.

He blamed Buganda for destroying the pine trees planted by the district.

The disagreements prompted the former Luwekula (a title given to the Kabaka’s representative in Buwekula County), Immaculate Kafeero Nantaayi, to raise the issue with Buganda’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, during his visit to Buwekula to assess the progress of the coffee farming campaign "Emwanyi Teriimba." Mayiga promised to address the matter.

Speaking to the Nile Post, Nantaayi’s successor, Andrew Mukasa Ssempijja, clarified that the district lacked proper background information on the history of the land and confirmed that, upon realizing it belongs to Buganda, the district chose to remain silent on the issue.

“This land belongs to Buwekula and is situated on Block 221, Plot 4. It is Mailo land measuring 200 acres, so I advise the district to reach out to Buwekula and process a lease title,” Ssempijja explained.

“This land has many tenants, including government projects like prisons, schools, and others, so our people shouldn’t be misled by the earlier information that Buwekula doesn’t own this land,” Ssempijja added.

Ssempijja also expressed his disappointment with the Ugandan government's delay in returning some of the land titles for certain sub-counties in Buwekula.

“I have reported the matter to the authorities in Mengo because some land titles are still held by the government, but we hope they are working tirelessly to resolve the matter,” he said.
