Minister Oboth halts local govt funding for RDC farewell
Oboth Oboth cited the already strained revenues of the lower administrative units as a key reason for his intervention.
The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Oboth Oboth, has stepped in to stop Tororo local governments from soliciting funds from sub-counties to finance a farewell party for the outgoing District Resident Commissioner (RDC).
Oboth Oboth cited the already strained revenues of the lower administrative units as a key reason for his intervention.
He assured that he would personally fund the event, sparing the sub-counties from any financial burden.
The Minister also confirmed his attendance at the party, which he referred to as his own thanksgiving celebration.
Minister Oboth commended the outgoing RDC, Nixon Owole, as the best in Tororo’s history.
He praised Owole for his calm demeanor, maturity, focus, sobriety, and down-to-earth nature, highlighting his crucial role in restoring peace and unity during his six years of service in the district.
Owole has been transferred to Koboko in West Nile, prompting Tororo district leadership to organise a farewell party in his honour.
The event is scheduled for Thursday.
Previously, Tororo District Chairperson John Okea had instructed each sub-county to contribute 100,000 Ugandan Shillings towards the farewell event.
However, this directive was met with criticism from some sub-county leaders and members of the public, who argued that the demand was unfair given the limited resources available.
Minister Oboth learned of the issue during a thanksgiving preparatory meeting at Siwa Primary School.
