The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has launched a major upgrade of the 56.3 km Iganga-Bulopa-Kamuli road, sparking excitement among local authorities and anticipation among residents in Luuka District.
In an effort to maximise the benefits of this upgrade, authorities are urging contractors to consider starting the construction from Walugogo in Iganga Municipality, where the road begins.
Simon Wakaze, the LC V Chairperson of Luuka, emphasised the strategic importance of this decision.
“Luuka District has been deprived of a tarmac road since its inception,” he explained, “except for the Trans-Africa road that passes through Bulanga Town Council. By commencing construction from Walugogo, the project will cover a larger portion of our district by 2026, compared to starting from Kamuli.”
Wakaze praised UNRA’s initiative, highlighting its potential to significantly improve the lives of Luuka residents. The existing road, particularly during the rainy season, is often rendered impassable due to flooding at Namadope Swamp, hindering the movement of goods and people.
The upgrade is expected to alleviate these challenges and provide a vital link to Kamuli and other parts of Kaliro District.
Ms Esther Mbayo, the Woman MP for Luuka, echoed Wakaze’s sentiments, urging the winning contractor to expedite the construction process.
“This upgrade has been long overdue,” she stressed. “The people of Luuka have suffered for far too long without a modern road network. It is imperative that the company prioritises this project and delivers tangible results.”
Mbayo also called on the government to address the long-awaited construction of the Trans-Busoga road, a project aimed at connecting all districts in the Busoga sub-region. She underscored the urgent need for this infrastructure upgrade to boost economic development and connectivity in the region.
The upgrade of the Iganga-Bulopa-Kamuli road is poised to bring significant economic and social benefits to Luuka District.
