The Igogero stream, typically a peaceful waterway, has become a deadly hazard for residents of Bugweri and Bugiri districts.
Situated at the border of Nabukalu and Buyanga sub-counties, the stream transforms into a raging torrent during the rainy season, cutting off entire communities.
So far, eight lives have been lost to the treacherous waters, highlighting the serious danger posed by the stream. Locals face a daunting challenge to cross from Lwanika village to Bupala, often paying steep fees to be carried across by strong men.
This dangerous crossing has severely disrupted livelihoods, halting businesses and trade.
Davidson Kasajja Mulumba, the Bugiri LC V Chairperson, acknowledges the residents' struggles but points to the district's financial constraints.
With over 90 streams and swamps covering 90 kilometres, improving infrastructure is a significant challenge. Despite these limitations, he assures the public that the district is committed to finding a solution.
District Engineer Peterson Mugoya shares this determination, confirming that UGX 300 million has been allocated for the stream's rehabilitation.
However, budget cuts and delayed funding have slowed progress. Nevertheless, the engineer remains optimistic that the project will be completed before September.
Security officials are also concerned. William Ssenoga, the Internal Security Officer, has raised alarms about the potential security risks posed by isolated communities.
He urges the Uganda National Roads Authority to develop a contingency plan to address the immediate crisis and ensure residents' safety.
As the rainy season continues, the people of Bupala and Lwanika live in constant fear. Their hopes rest on the promise of a bridge and the swift implementation of a solution to protect them from the deadly grip of the Igogero stream.
