A team of UPDF commandos have attacked three camps belonging to Lord’s Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony in Central African Republic.
According to the deputy UPDF spokesperson, Col Deo Akiiki, the attack on Tuesday morning was carried out in coordination with the South Sudan and C.A.R forces.
“All camps were destroyed and equipment captured,” Col Akiiki said.
The Ugandan army spokesperson said the targeted camps were located East of Sam Ouandja, a town located in the Central African Republic prefecture of Haute-Kotto near the border with Sudan.
Having been defeated in Uganda, Joseph Kony and remnants of his lord’s Resistance Army rebels fled to Central African Republic .
Kony's group has remained in this region and has survived by growing crops, hunting bushmeat, and collecting honey while periodically bartering with local traders
Having been weakened, Kony went into almost a lull with limited activity.
Earlier this year, he was back in the news when it was reported that Russian mercenaries working for the Wagner Group had almost captured him in a remote corner of the Central African Republic in early April.
The Ugandan army on Tuesday said the hunt for Kony and his remnants is still on.
“Remnants of LRA still taking refuge in CAR or elsewhere on continent Africa will be hunted down. Unless they hand themselves in to authorities for proper processing and rehabilitation they will continue to be considered as criminals,” Col Akiiki said.
In 2021, the U.S. government announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Joseph Kony.
