Devastating storm leaves Tororo villages roofless
A strong storm has ravaged the villages of Angorom West and South in Morukatipe Sub County, Tororo District, leaving numerous homes roofless and causing widespread destruction to local crops.
Heavy rain and strong winds swept through the area, tearing roofs off houses and flattening crop gardens, including cassava, bananas, and recently planted maize.
The affected residents are now facing severe hardship, with many left without shelter as their homes have been rendered uninhabitable. In response, local residents have opened their homes to provide temporary refuge to their displaced neighbours.
"Many people here are houseless. Some are now living with their relatives and friends. The affected homes are closed," said Sam Okia, the local council chairperson of Angorom West village.
Despite the community’s efforts to house the affected, the situation remains dire, with immediate needs for emergency aid, including food and temporary housing.
"Most locals lost even the food inside their houses, so they have no food as we speak," confirmed Chairperson Okia.
District authorities, through the office of the Resident District Commissioner, are assessing the extent of the damage and coordinating relief efforts to support those impacted by the storm.
Community leaders are urging residents to assist with donations and volunteer support for the recovery of the affected persons.
This storm is a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to extreme weather events and the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness and response strategies.
