World Bank threatens to withdraw Kampala drainage funding
The mood at the City Hall, the home of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), is somber after the World Bank threatened to withdraw funds worth Shs52.82 billion meant to fix drainage channels of Nalukolongo and Kaludubi in Lubaga Division.
According to Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, the withdrawal threat comes after government fails to meet the agreements it made with the Bank.
Kampala suffers from serious flooding even after light showers and officials are afraid this could go on longer due to failure of governments response to compensate the affected people next to drainage systems as agreed with World Bank.
According to Lukwago, among the three pillars work plans by the Bank to the Kampala Metropolitan Area is urban resilience and environment to construct Nalukolongo and Kaludubi channels in Lubaga that check flooding in the city.
The deputy director roads and drainage at KCCA, Maurice Kairania, said the city needs $200 million (Shs740 billion) to fix drainage systems, money the government does not have.
