The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has encouraged retired bishops to maintain their spiritual lives and stay informed, even in retirement.
He made these remarks as retired bishops of the Church of Uganda, along with their spouses and the widows of late bishops, gathered at Lweza Training and Conference Centre for a two-day residential retreat.
Dr. Kaziimba officially opened the retreat, emphasizing its objectives: reconnecting, fellowship, seeking advice and guidance, and supporting each other.
"Many have retired and been far apart from one another. We believe it's a very good opportunity to meet again and make important reflections," he said.
Archbishop Kaziimba shared his experiences of visiting both incumbent and retired bishops, and widows of late bishops, during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating the visits were risky but insightful.
"In this retreat, we have lined up a number of speakers on health, spirituality, and responsible living in retirement," he added.
"It is important to live spiritually retired but responsibly and continue to serve," he advised.
Dr. Kaziimba highlighted the successful clearance of the church's debt, an effort he acknowledged as a collective achievement due to the bishops' hard work.
"The bishops need to be updated on where the Church is. For instance, they worked so much to ensure that the church has projects put in place. I think it is good for them to hear that now the debt is cleared," he said.
The Archbishop also noted the development progress at the Uganda Martyrs Site, another significant project that the bishops have been instrumental in advancing.
"They worked so hard to see that the Uganda Martyrs Site is developed. Now they have some good news to take," he added.
While celebrating these successes, Archbishop Kaziimba emphasized the importance of sharing both the positive news and the ongoing challenges the church faces.
Bishop William Rukirande, 92, former Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, shared his active engagement in farming and writing during retirement.
Rt. Rev. Eng. George Bagamuhunda, retired Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi and representative of retired bishops in the House of Bishops, urged his peers to live within their means and plan resources carefully.
Bishop Zebedee Masereka, retired Bishop of South Ruwenzori Diocese, credited his peaceful retirement to his wife's efforts in managing their family businesses.
Over 70 participants, including retired bishops, their spouses, and widows of retired bishops, attended the retreat. The next retreat is scheduled for July 2025.
