The Electoral Commission has welcomed seven new political parties in its registration books in anticipation of the 2026 general elections.
Among the newly registered parties is the National Revival Coalition, spearheaded by former presidential candidate John Katumba. Other parties include the National Foundation Party, National Agrarian Party, People Power Front, Shine Uganda, Uganda Prosperity Party, and National Economic and Redemption.
Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission, revealed that three of the seven parties are in the advanced stages of verification, signalling progress in their registration process.
With the addition of these seven parties, Uganda's political landscape now boasts a total of 33 registered political parties.
However, the growing number of parties poses a significant challenge to the Electoral Commission, necessitating increased funding to manage the expanding workload effectively.
