In preparation for the upcoming National Housing and Population Census, 500 soldiers from the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) have completed a nine-day training at Gaddafi Barracks in Jinja City.

The training aimed to equip UPDF officers with the necessary skills to serve as supervisors and enumerators during the census.

Speaking at the closure of the training, Chris Mukiza, the executive director of Uganda National Bureau of Standards, commended the decision to involve UPDF officers in census activities.

He highlighted the importance of including soldiers and their families in the census, emphasizing the need for comprehensive data collection.

"We are ready to go; all the equipment has reached the sub-counties, training centers, and we are trying to tie the loose ends to ensure the provision of information is collected," Mukiza said.

Brig Gen Ephraim Mugume, the head of the UPDF census committee, noted that participants were selected from various units and formations of the UPDF to serve as battalion supervisors and enumerators.

He encouraged soldiers to apply the knowledge gained from the training while upholding the ideological principles of the UPDF.

The National Housing and Population Census, scheduled to commence on 10 May 2024 and span ten days, is expected to benefit from the involvement of trained UPDF personnel in ensuring accurate and inclusive data collection.
