Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Kizza Besigye has challenged Ugandans to "resist captivity", which he says the people have been entangled in under the leadership of President Museveni.

Dr Besigye made the call while leading FDC-Katonga for a consultative meeting with party faithful from Kisoro, Rukiga, Rubanda and Kabale districts in Kabale Municipality on Thursday.

At exactly 11:40am, Dr Besigye and his FDC Katonga faction arrived in the municipality. In tow were Buhweju County MP Francis Mwejukye, Kabale Municipality MP Nichola Kamara, former FDC chairman Waswa Birigwa, former vice-president for eastern Salaamu Musumba, former deputy secretary general Harold Kaija, and mobiliser and former Rukungiri District Woman MP candidate Igrid Turinawe.

Police commanded by the RPC Kigezi sub-region Ibrahim Saiga and DPC Kabale Joseph Bakaleke, cut off the road with road block, telling Dr Besigye and his team not to cause commotion in the town.

After about 40 minutes of a mini-standoff, Besigye and his team were later allowed to proceed with their convoy around Kabale town.

Dr Besigye called on the FDC leaders and supporters to know that there has been no time when Uganda has ever been free from captivity, adding that as FDC, what they came do is not yet done and its high time everyone wakes up from sleeping mood.

“The situation of captivity and slavery, that’s the condition we all have to unite and fight against, that’s the situation us as FDC as a party has been fighting," the four-time presidential candidate said.

"Men and women of Uganda I want you to understand on far the word captivity and slavery has taken us as Ugandans.”

Besigye further rubbished government programmes such as Parish Development Model and Emwooga, saying they are not beneficial but intend to divert Ugandans.

“I most times feel pain when I hear that there are government programmes like Parish Development Model, Emwooga yet some of the money used is your money as taxpayers. Those government programmes do not benefit you at all but rather they are there to divert you,” he said.

Today, Dr Besigye is scheduled to lead FDC-Katonga faction Rukungiri District for the last consultation meeting in Kigezi Sub-region.
